Keep the scope small enough that you can inspect the result yourself. AI can accelerate the work, but it should not erase the distinction between a suggestion, a changed file, a successful build and a verified product.

Create PROJECT_STATE.md with Goal, Completed, Current step, Next step, Last verified test and Known blockers. Stop your session, reopen the project and continue using only the repository and state file.
Create a state file another session can understand
In the project root, create PROJECT_STATE.md. Add: Goal, Completed, Current step, Next step, Tests run and Known problems. Fill it with the real state, close your editor/AI session, reopen the project and read this file before continuing. Success means you can identify the exact next action without chat history.
Turn the idea into evidence.
Do the action in a disposable or backed-up workspace first. Write down what you expected to happen, what actually happened and what you changed when the result differed. This small habit becomes increasingly important as your AI tools gain access to more files and commands.
Do not move on until this is true.
You can resume correctly without relying on memory of the previous chat.
